As the year is gradually going to an end, there is always the need to evaluate our leadership work and give God thanks due Him for helping us in many ways. We need to know that showing gratitude to God shouldn't be a compulsion; but a necessity. As a matter of fact, giving of thanks or being grateful is a sacrifice we must always carry out; in our homes, works, families and leadership.
Gratitude has to be authentic and heartfelt in order to make impact on the person been given. So it must not be seen as as an obligation; it is “the right thing to say and do”. One thing you must know is this: whenever people express gratitude, not only do they benefit from the recognition of something or somebody that makes a positive difference in their lives, but by that gesture they also set themselves on another platform to receive more of whatever it was in the first place.
Taking this a level deeper, demonstrations of gratitude are energizing for the recipient and fulfilling for the giver. When people feel truly appreciated for their contributions, results and actions, they give their best, and higher levels of performance are unleashed. So, you can imagine how God; the maker of heaven and the earth will be feeling now. God does not joke with a thankful attitude from us. The more thankful we are, the more blessing, grace and outpouring of the Spirit will be release upon us. Gratitude creates an atmosphere that makes God compelled to do beyond what He may intend to do. A heart full of praise is a heart that will be raised in destiny. It was Apostle Bank Jefferson who said that, “If you are thankful, your tank will be full”. When you are grateful for what God has done; you are simply getting ready for the next blessings to be released on you. Gratitude will create an atmosphere for you that can never be polluted.
The role of leaders in creating such an environment is fundamental. It takes self-confidence, humility and awareness of God’s faithfulness over your life and work to admit His divine ability is ALL that is responsible for the success, or progress you have seen so far. No leader who truly understands the intricacies of leading will ignore the place of thanksgiving. To lead people without your leadership boat capsizing in the turbulent waters of 365 days must be a miracle! It could only be God who has stood by you all through the year. No doubt, God has assisted you in no small measure. That is the more reason you must appreciate Him. And let me advice you – never thank God only for yourself as a leader; but also for everyone that worked with you in the course of this outgoing year – your team in the work place, your clients in the market place, and for the organization you lead or represents. No matter their frailties, one way or the other they have helped you to achieve something again this year. We can only hope it gets better in the coming year. The America nation can tell you better what thanksgiving really means. They so understood it that that legislated to make it a day separated to God for appreciation. No wonder; they keep flourishing because they are have committed themselves to giving God His due - irrespective of their waywardness; lousiness; pride etc. But because they have learnt how to give god Hi due; He will keep having mercy on them.
So, as we gradually draw the curtain of 2011, pause and have a reflection. Reflect on God who deserves your praise of gratitude (2 Samuel 22: 4), not only for the things He does; the things He is doing; and the things He will do. But for WHOM HE IS in your life. This the more reason why you mus show gratitude for His grace; mercy, loving kindness; strength; wisdom; provision and good health in this out going year.
THANK YOU DEAR LORD - it's been you; without you, the story would have been different.

MEASURING UP TO GOD’S STANDARD FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
God has a standard. And those who are following Him must queue up to it, if the work will be done as He wants it. You must know that the ways of the world is; and can never be the ways of God. Since He is the one who called you by saying – “Follow Me and I will MAKE YOU… (Mark 1:17). Your making it in leadership is dependent on how you can adhere to His standard. That means, to do great work, or build His people effectively in leadership, will be simpler if only you can measure up to His requirement, which is not ambiguous. In fact, Bible confirm this: “His law (commandment, principle) are not grievous – 1 John 5:3. God will never compromise His Standard. You are the one that must step up for Him to use you, according to your willingness to abide by His rule.
WHAT IS STANDARD
Standard, is the level that is considered to be acceptable for something to be done. It is a guiding principle for strict enforcement of required measurement, which will become a pattern that can comply with any code of practice.
By this, it does mean Biblically that "standard" refers to an accepted criterion of measurement for length or capacity of a thing, as we see in 2 Chron. 3:3. In this case, it will be criteria for judgment of character, acceptance, behavior, or worth in leadership. Therefore, to walk or work with God must be with the intention to also follow Him duly; and abide by always by His measurement, as may be reflected in the instructions He passes across for His work to be done effectively, at any time. Specifically, God instructed Moses to build His work by maintaining standard He laid down. “ And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it” (Ex 25:8-9).
Still in Ezek. 45:9-12, God declared the measurement that will conform to what He expected those who lead in the administration of justice. He always knows what He wants; how He wants it and why. King Solomon was wiser to carefully built God’s house and lead His people by prescribed standard (1 Chron. 6; 1 kings 3:4-14,6:1-2). If he had not followed the standard laid down by God for His house to be built; Solomon would have been done away with just as his father David.
DANGER OF NOT MEASURING UP TO STANDARD
Organizations all over the world are always mindful of the work or project they do; and how it must be done in order to have a lasting structure. Things that are done without respect for standard usually do no last. For example, goods produced in the factory without standard quality control can never compete for advantage in the market. Because of this, manufacturing companies spend hundred of millions to equip their Quality Control Unit (QCU), so that they maintain standard in their production. Likewise, for a leader to do well in leadership a measurement of requirement is needed to be able attain God’s standard.
HOW TO MEASURE UP TO GOD’S STANDARD
Working for God is the most beautiful and sweetest experience anyone can have in a life time. But working for Him without clear understanding of what He wants and how He wants it can be traumatic and frustrating. Leaders, who do not understand God and how He works, will continue to suffer in leadership. Having understood these, there is a need here to make clear God’s standard that can enhance leadership work.
1. The standard of Service
Ability to serve others is the quickest way to get work done in leadership; and it promote faster than any paper qualification. David was serving in the bush before God considered him for the throne in the city. Anyone who disregards service can not go far in leadership. To God, the way to the top, starts from the bottom.
2. The standard of Character
General Schwartzkopf, a former U.S army general said, “Leadership is a combination of strategy and Character. If you must be without one, be without strategy. Leaders are failing today – be it in ministry; politics; industry; academic or governance, because they lack character. Without character, you will travel so slowly and lonely in life. God considers character seriously.
3. The standard of Intercession
Prayer is entreating and engaging God to intervene in matters beyond human wisdom, strength and comprehension. It is very essential to survive in leadership because whatever is worth worrying about is worth praying about.
4. The standard of Humility
The more humble you are; the more people you will attract. Proud people are usually discarded by God to be used of; so they force their way into leadership work. God value humility and it is a major measurement for anyone wishing to do His work. Humble leaders attract more grace but proud people attract trouble and rejection, both from man and God.
5. The standard of Influence
It is a common fact that rulers use force; but a leader that wants to be effective will use influence. It is the ability to work with; and move people without using using force. To be effective in leadership, do away with the use of blackmail in order to get people to your side. The influence of David(the Sheppard boy), was enough to sway people’ sentiment in his favour against King Saul.

MEASURING UP TO GOD’S STANDARD FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
The wife of a drunkard once found her husband in a filthy condition with torn
clothes, matted hair, bruised face, asleep in the kitchen having come home from
a drunken revel. She quickly sent for a photographer and had a portrait of him,
taken in all his wretched appearance. She placed the picture on the table where
he could see it, beside another portrait taken at the time of their marriage.
In the marriage picture, he was looking handsome and well dressed, as he had
been in other days. But in the drunken picture, he was complete opposite. After
he woke up from his drunken state of mind, he became sober and then; he saw the
two pictures place on the table by his wife – he was sad the more. That awakened
him to a consciousness of his condition. Then, he made up his mind to live a
better life.
The story above certainly will do well to challenge every one of us who are
called to the position of leadership, to realize God’s expectation from us.
There is no gainsay in the fact that a leader is ‘a repairer’, that is entrusted
with the lives of people under him or her, to mend their broken hearts, tolerate
their weaknesses, chat a cause of destiny for them, help their dreams to be
realized and show them a better way of doing things, without compromise. A
leader must constantly see that he or she is a merchant of hope. No one can
lead other people except by showing them a future. True leaders are those who
must lead by example, rather than by intimidation or blackmail. To be a leader
is to value and be willing to maintain God’s standard in all you do or wherever
you may be leading from.
However, don’t be too carried away by the glamour associated to being a leader,
without understanding how to make it work in Godly manner, that can deliver
result and still fulfill Kingdom mandate on earth. In other words, to be a
leader is not just about leading. It is about leading effectively. That is an
herculean task! And so many leaders of today can not comprehend it deeply. But
for it to be clearly understood, you need to know that there are standards laid
down by God for us to follow; or else anything done outside of that will be a
ruse. This is where the problem is!
All around us today – in ministry, politics, family, community, school, industry
and governance; everybody wants to be a leader. But not everybody wants to do it
in God’s way. Now, people force their way into leadership because they are not
found to have measured up, at least to the basic tenet of leadership engagement.
God has a standard. And those who are following Him must queue up to it, if the
work will be done as He wants it. You must know that the ways of the world is;

Inability to measure up to divine standard is the reason why many people are
failing and crumbling in their leadership pursuit. Failure to constantly
connect to God in measuring to His standard will cause the following:
· Absence of solid relationship with God.
· Lack of godly vision and personal drive to move people towards goals.
· Unyielding to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
· Control by fear and inner struggle.
· Inadequate knowledge and training on leadership.
· Raising substandard workers to work with.
· Promoting personal status and worth over God’s expectation
· Exposure to ridicule and rejection
· Lack of confidence in facing people with God’s principle.

ATTAINING EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP
Excellence in leadership must be driven by a desire to improve what is being done in the way it is done. Here I share with you some of the factors that can set in motion the pursuit of excellence, with uncommon dedication to ensure the desire is attained without compromising the ethical principles of God’s word. Therefore to be excellence oriented, you must understand the following if want to see your leadership, work business or ministry moving ahead the standard of your closest competitors:
1. Excellence Requires Standard
There are standard in almost everything done on earth. In various profession, there are standard behaviour and practice. In leadership, anything less than improved service and delivery, will be nothing but inferior because – if standard can not be maintained at all, it must not be lowered than it is. So, always maintain standard – ethical standard; professional standard; godly standard; communication standard; integrity standard; relational standard and so on.
2. Excellence Requires Priority
To pursue and do one thing successfully is far better than engaging in many and yet, unsuccessful in any. Itemize all you need to do and priorities that most important of them, and through discipline make conscious effort to become better on that one thing. Don’t be a jack of all trades and master of none. You might be good in all areas, but at least be the best in one.
3. Excellence Requires Objective
Without aim, aimlessness is inevitable objective is the reason for doing what you do. To achieve excellence, objective – which can be vision, goal etc., must be very clear in order to have both insight and foresight which can always propel you to achieve excellence. When there is no specific objective attach to what you do, the won’t be reason and passion to improve on it.
4. Excellence Requires
Style simply means the particular way something is done. No two people are the same. And the way we all do things are clearly difference. More than anything apart from idea, excellence responds easily to style. When you have or initiate a style, the way you do things will become and attraction and a benchmark for others. Even if all you do is what others are doing already.
5. Excellence Requires Process
Everything in life is a process. To achieve excellence, a deliberate process that can initiate and sustain must be put in place. If process is lacking, there won’t be any continuity that will carry on the passion for excellence. Continuation will encourage evaluation, evaluation will encourage correction and correction will encourage improvement. Without process, being under illusion is inevitable because you will keep thinking that what you have done, or doing presently is the best – whereas, people are living you behind.

LEADERS AND IMPERATIVE FOR CHANGE
What a year! 2011. A new year that is craving for attention in every segment of our daily existence. It is a year that offers new hope for new height in our personal lives; business; marriage; job; studies; polity; churches and ministry etc. It is also a year we can preempt, provided we can perceive all what it came to offer us.
Knowing these then, there is a need for us to move from our past to the present in order to have successful and rewarding leadership this year. This movement can only be enhanced by the vehicle of change. Change brings progress and lack of it promotes and oils the machinery of stagnation. Without change there can never be any meaningful growth that can be a platform for lasting success in any endeavour. To change is to grow; and to grow is to change. When the concept of change is totally embraced – there will be tremendous transformation in and around you and your work. But when change is resisted and often despised, everything will become dull, uninspiring, routine and traditional.
Change, according to Oxford Advance Learners dictionary is “ any act of making something or somebody different with the aim of altering or modifying their shape, meaning, service, nature, concept, focus, appearance, process, style, character, outlook and strategy to achieve better imaging or performance and result.” Now, this is where the problem lies: everybody wants to make progress. But not everybody wants to change to see the progress. And this is the same for many leaders. They want to have stable and successful leadership, but they refused – consciously or unconsciously, to pay attention to what needs to be discarded for their work to move forward.
Why People Don’t Embrace Change
1. Fear of failure - Leaders who are always afraid of failing will constantly oppose the need for change. Since such leaders are driven by fear, it will also be difficult for them to see the favour change can bring to them.
2. Lack of foresight - Leaders whose sense of perception is low can never imaging the impossible; and then will not have any passion for options. Option exists only to those who know that where they are now is not the destination yet. This is the bane of our political leaders in Nigeria . Once they win an election, they see it as an end; rather than seeing it as a means to an end. To them, their whole existence rests on the present advantage the have over people. What an hopeless situation, magnified by hopeless people in authority!
3. Satisfaction with average - Average, is described as the best of the worst and the worst of the best. Leaders who always enjoy celebrating the ‘achievements’ of yesterday to the detriment of the expectations of today will never reckon with the need for change. To them the past was the best and the future is unpredictable.
4. Position conscious - Leaders who are carried away by position will not see changes around them easily; neither will they hear the clamour from people under them for change. A lot of people exist under leaders who have bright ideas about what and how to change, but they are listened to because the are not ‘worthy, competent or in the same level’ with them to offer advise.
5. Lack of personal development - To develop yourself is to improve your personal worth, not in term of money, but in terms of value. Leaders who don’t read books of others; attend seminars and training; explore internet; listen to news and mix with his or her peers will find it difficult to consider change. Such leaders are trapped within themselves and until they reach out, they can not see beyond their noses.
Having considered why change is not often pursued by many leaders, there is need to also know what must be changed by us to witness growth and increase of our work. In this new year, to run a good leadership that will impact positively on our work, we must be willing to change the following:
What to Change in Leadership
1. Opinion-
One thing that stands against leaders easily is the issue of opinion. Never hold on too tight to your opinion. Opinion can change at any time. Most leaders are driven by the opinion of others. So, wrong opinion about people you work with; wealth; ideology etc should change for good. It is only when you opinion conflict with the word of God that you stand on the immutable word. If not, have a change of mentality.
2. Structure-
For you to see progress all you may need is change in you entity, which includes designs; space; furniture etc., within your work, office or even home. Creative rearrangement can save a lot of hassle and make people perceive and do business with you in a new way. Moving gadget, chairs, table from where they have always been to another place might just make your work more attractive to new people around you.
3. Friends-
I have often said it this way that: friendship is not by force, it is by choice. Your friends will determine your frontiers. Do away with friends who are not helping you to advance in the course of your life or work. Henry Ford, said “my best friend is the one that brings out the best in me.“ Friends who put you under pressure and encourage you to do what you don’t want to do should be dropped. Look for new friends who are connecting and have ability to add value to you and your work. Unproductive partners should be done away with.
4. Strategy-
Strategy is always better than energy. Think back! How have you done what you did in the last one year that has not worked? If you can answer the question; then solution is near to you. Until you know what you ought to know you will keep struggling with what you do. There is a place for prayer and there is also a place for strategy. Change your pattern of operation. Learn more how others do it better and apply it in your own case. Usually, principles are the same everywhere. But what is different is the application of the principles.
4. Language-
By language I mean your confession. What you confess is what your language becomes and that is what people will always respond to. Loud your change; talk about it; confess it all the time until people buy into you. You can’t be more than what you believe and confess.
I wish you all the best as you make effort to change what needs t be change for progress to be visible in your leadership. WALE OLAOLUWA www.leadershipgrowthreviews.blogspot.com
